The art of happiness: 7 simple ways to live a happy life

Happiness is often seen as this big, elusive dream that’s always just out of reach. We chase it, but sometimes it feels like the faster we run, the more it slips away.

Truth be told, happiness doesn’t have to be so complicated. After my years as an entrepreneur—riding the highs of successful deals and the lows of near-bankruptcy—I’ve realized that true happiness comes from simple, everyday habits.

Here are seven ways to bring more joy into your life.

1. Practice Daily Gratitude

It might sound basic, but gratitude is a game-changer. Take a moment each day—mornings work best for me—to mentally list a few things you’re grateful for.

These can be big (like family and good health) or small (the perfect cup of coffee or a relaxing sunset). Shifting your focus to the positive really shapes your mindset in the long run.

2. Embrace Mindfulness

Mindfulness is about being fully present in the moment. That can be as simple as turning off your phone notifications when you spend time with your friends or savoring every bite of a meal.

Back when I was juggling investor calls at all hours, I found that a few minutes of mindful breathing each morning helped me stay calm and grounded.

It’s surprising how something so simple can make such a huge difference in keeping stress at bay.

3. Surround Yourself with Positive People

We become like the people we spend the most time with, so choosing our company wisely is essential.

When I was building my startup, I often found myself surrounded by naysayers who doubted our potential.

Once I distanced myself from the constant negativity and spent more time with forward-thinking, encouraging folks, my mood (and business) improved dramatically.

Seek out friends and mentors who lift you up and inspire you to be your best.

4. Give More Than You Take

One of the biggest lessons I learned during my entrepreneurship days was the value of giving—whether it’s advice, support, or your time. Generosity doesn’t cost a thing but can have a profound impact on both the giver and the receiver.

Consider volunteering at a local shelter, helping a neighbor, or simply offering a listening ear to someone who needs to vent. Acts of kindness give you a sense of purpose and lift your own spirits.

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” – Winston Churchill

5. Move Your Body

Running a business often meant sitting for long hours, buried in spreadsheets. Over time, I realized how much a brisk walk or quick workout could do for both my physical and mental health.

Whether it’s dancing around your living room or hitting the gym, moving your body releases endorphins (the “happy” hormones) and helps clear your mind. Trust me, your future self will thank you.

6. Set Meaningful Goals

Having something to work toward gives your life direction.

Back when I was writing my first articles for SmallBizTechnology (after my entrepreneurial journey wound down), setting simple goals—like publishing one article a week—kept me energized and looking forward.

Your goals don’t have to be huge. They just need to be meaningful to you, so you wake up with a sense of purpose each day.

7. Celebrate Small Wins

Life is made up of countless little victories—finishing a challenging project, sticking to your workout routine for a week, or even just waking up on time.

Recognize and celebrate those moments. Acknowledging your progress, however small, helps build momentum and keeps you motivated. Plus, it’s a great way to remind yourself of how far you’ve come.

A Personal Note

When I think about my journey—starting out in a cramped garage office, pitching to skeptical investors, and later transitioning into writing full-time—I realize that happiness wasn’t just about the big milestones. It was the small habits and moments of gratitude that truly kept me going. It’s about taking life one step at a time, enjoying each victory (and even each failure, because you learn from it), and staying true to what makes you genuinely happy.

So, here’s my challenge to you: pick one of these seven ideas and give it a shot for a week. It might be starting a gratitude journal, choosing a more uplifting circle of friends, or celebrating your little successes. Happiness isn’t a grand, unattainable goal—sometimes it’s just the accumulation of small, positive actions that turn into a lifetime of contentment.

Remember: you’ve got the power to shape your life into something amazing, one day at a time. Keep pushing forward, stay curious, and never lose sight of the little things that bring a smile to your face.
