If you’ve got these 7 things in your life, you’re more fortunate than you think

Stop for a second and imagine a scenario: you’re scrolling through social media, seeing friends or colleagues touting their latest achievements—expensive vacations, shiny new cars, or perfect family pictures.

It’s easy to feel like you’ve missed the boat or that your life isn’t quite up to snuff, isn’t it?

I’ve been there more times than I’d like to admit. Sometimes, I catch myself comparing my behind-the-scenes to someone else’s highlight reel. I’ll feel anxious about where I am on my personal journey.

But here’s the thing: even if you don’t have a garage full of Lamborghinis or your dream home just yet, there are certain elements in life that are priceless.

So today, let’s take a step back and look at the gifts we do have that means we’re already more fortunate than we might think. Hopefully, this will get you to look at your life in a more positive light.

Let’s get started.

1) Good health

People often say, “Health is wealth,” and I couldn’t agree more.

When we’re healthy, we have an energy reservoir to fuel our ambitions. Whether it’s pursuing a new business venture or simply spending time with loved ones, good health is the foundation that lets us take action.

As Winston Churchill once said, “Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have.” The same applies on a personal level: a healthy body and mind allow you to make the most of every single day.

If you’re able to get out of bed with minimal aches and pains, you’re more privileged than a huge portion of the world.

Even if you do have a few health issues here and there, access to decent medical care and knowledge about how to live a better lifestyle is a real blessing.

2) A reliable support system

I grew up thinking “I’ve got to do everything on my own.”

That was until I hit a rough patch in my life—juggling a demanding job and dealing with a personal loss—and I realized I couldn’t keep it together without a solid support system.

Friends, family, mentors, or even supportive online communities can be our lifelines during tough times.

They’re also the first to celebrate our wins. Having people in your corner means you’re never truly alone when life throws a curveball.

Studies show that strong social connections can help reduce stress, combat depression, and improve overall health.

Here at Small Biz Technology, we often talk about how crucial collaboration is for entrepreneurs. Well, it’s just as crucial in our personal lives.

I’ve mentioned this before but it’s worth repeating: the people around you can either lift you up or pull you down, so if you’ve got at least one or two folks cheering you on, you’re already doing better than you might realize.

3) The ability to learn and grow

Cal Newport, author of Deep Work, has noted how powerful focused learning can be in today’s distraction-heavy world.

If you have the ability (and the curiosity) to keep learning—whether that’s through reading a book, taking an online course, or even listening to podcasts—you’re setting yourself up for constant evolution.

Learning doesn’t just expand our knowledge; it reshapes how we approach problems, relationships, and our goals.

One of the greatest blessings is knowing there’s no cap on how much we can develop.

Think of each skill or piece of knowledge as a new arrow in your quiver. Whether you’re exploring a new language or figuring out the latest software to give your business an edge, the capability to adapt in a rapidly shifting world is pure gold.

And if you’re reading this article, that means you have access to technology that opens countless doors for continuous education—a fortune many still lack.

This brings me to the next point…

4) Access to technology

Before you roll your eyes—because technology can sometimes feel like a double-edged sword—hear me out.

From smartphones to high-speed internet, technology has the power to connect us to ideas, people, and markets around the globe.

If you’ve got the tools to learn new skills online, communicate with distant friends, or even launch a digital business, that’s a serious advantage.

I’ve lived in places where internet connectivity was spotty, at best, and it made me appreciate stable Wi-Fi so much more.

Technology also levels the playing field for small businesses and independent creators. It allows us to reach audiences we never would have had access to otherwise.

Even something as simple as managing your finances through an app or collaborating with a team remotely can be a game-changer.

Not to mention, for personal development, there’s a wealth of free resources out there—webinars, videos, articles—that can help you grow in ways people only dreamed of just a few decades ago.

So if you’re reading this on a device connected to the internet, consider yourself fortunate indeed.

5) A sense of purpose

Have you ever rolled out of bed and felt like you didn’t have a clue why you were doing what you were doing?

Maybe you were on autopilot, going through the motions without any real drive.

Contrast that with the days when you wake up excited about a project, a cause, or a vision you’re chasing.

That sense of purpose is like a secret fuel that keeps you going, even when things get tough.

Some people discover their purpose early in life. Others, like me, have tried multiple paths—corporate jobs, entrepreneurial ventures, writing—before feeling that spark of clarity.

But once you know what you stand for or what you’re working towards, everyday tasks become meaningful.

You don’t have to be changing the entire world. Even if your purpose is to provide a secure home for your family or to share knowledge with a small community, that’s already huge.

As Greg McKeown wrote in Essentialism, “Clarity about what is essential fuels us with the strength to say no to the nonessentials.”

If you’ve got clarity around why you do what you do, it’s a massive advantage.

6) Freedom and autonomy

This one’s easy to overlook until it’s gone. The freedom to choose your own path, voice your opinions, and make decisions about your life is an incredible privilege.

When I left my corporate job to focus on writing and entrepreneurship, I realized just how precious that sense of freedom is.

Not everyone in the world enjoys this luxury—some are bound by circumstances or external factors that severely limit their choices.

If you’re in a position to decide how to spend your day, what projects to work on, or where you want your career to go, you’re far more fortunate than you may think.

For me, it was liberating to discover that if I wasn’t happy with a particular situation, I had the power to change it.

That sense of control can inspire creativity, entrepreneurship, and a whole lot of joy.

7) A means to earn a living

Money isn’t the end-all, be-all, but let’s face it, having enough resources to cover your basic needs—and maybe a little extra—is definitely a major blessing.

I don’t have to stress about where my next meal is coming from or whether I can keep the lights on, and that allows me to focus on bigger goals.

The peace of mind that comes from financial stability is one of those things we don’t realize is so precious until it’s threatened.

Even if you’re not making millions, having some form of steady income or financial support places you in a more secure position than many people worldwide.

And if you’re an entrepreneur or a freelancer, you also have the added benefit of steering your own ship.

Sure, it can be stressful at times, but it’s a privilege to create wealth or opportunities on your own terms.

After all, it’s not just about the money itself—it’s about the freedom and options it provides.

Final words

That’s it for this one, folks. I hope this little reminder highlights how much you already have going for you.

It’s natural to chase bigger goals—after all, striving for improvement fuels creativity and ambition. But along the way, don’t forget to recognize the blessings sitting right under your nose.

Being healthy, supported, purposeful, and free might not always get the same flashy attention as a new sports car or luxury vacation, but these are the real foundations of a satisfying life.

You’re fortunate if you’ve got even a handful of the elements we talked about today. Keep building on them, keep learning, and remember to pause once in a while to appreciate all that you already have.

As always, I hope you found some value in this post. Until next time!
