If someone uses these 7 phrases in a conversation, they have a toxic personality

Ever get that strange feeling in a conversation where something just doesn’t sit right? Over the years, I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way) that certain phrases can be big red flags.

These are the words that seep out when someone’s trying to manipulate, disrespect, or undermine you. They might not even realize they’re doing it—but it can definitely leave a sour taste.

I’ve been through my own fair share of business ups and downs, like launching a startup in a cramped garage and later watching it grow beyond my wildest dreams—only to see it crumble when market trends shifted.

Through all of it, I’ve come to value clear, respectful communication as a pillar of both professional and personal success.

After all, “When people show you who they are, believe them the first time,” as Maya Angelou famously said.

With that in mind, let’s dive into seven key phrases that signal a toxic personality. Spot them early, and you’ll save yourself a lot of headaches.

1. “You’re overreacting.”

This phrase is a sneaky way of dismissing your feelings. If someone constantly claims you’re “overreacting,” they’re trying to invalidate your emotions rather than understand them.

It shifts the blame onto you for having genuine feelings. Healthy communication involves empathy—not brushing someone off.

If you hear this a lot, ask yourself if this person truly respects your perspective or is just trying to dodge accountability.

2. “I’m just being honest.”

We all appreciate honesty, but there’s a fine line between truthfulness and cruelty. Some folks hide behind this phrase to say things they know are hurtful. Real honesty should be constructive, not a blanket excuse to tear someone down.

Look for someone who’s honest in a tactful way, focusing on growth rather than criticism.

3. “You’ll never make it without me.”

I’ve worked with people who said I’d “never make it” in business on my own. Back in my startup days, it stung to hear that. But I realized they were trying to keep control.

A statement like this indicates someone wants you to believe you’re helpless without them. Don’t buy into that narrative.

As Vince Lombardi once said, “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.”

Surround yourself with people who build you up and encourage your independence.

4. “It’s not my fault.”

Everyone slips up; it’s part of being human. But when someone repeatedly refuses to acknowledge their mistakes, it’s a bad sign.

They might pin the blame on a teammate, “the system,” or even the weather, but never themselves. This lack of responsibility can be toxic in both personal and professional settings.

Look for people who own their mistakes and focus on fixing them. That’s the sign of real leadership.

5. “I don’t have time for this.”

Sometimes we genuinely don’t have time, but often this phrase is a put-down. It implies that your concerns or ideas aren’t worth their attention. In business, it’s like someone saying, “My problems matter more than yours.”

Effective leaders—even busy ones—find ways to listen and address issues, rather than shutting them down.

6. “You must be stupid if you think that.”

Name-calling is never a good look, and it’s especially glaring when it’s wrapped in a phrase like this. Not only is it disrespectful, but it’s also a manipulative tactic to make you feel inferior.

People who resort to insults often have trouble forming logical arguments.

Challenge the toxic label by asking the person to clarify instead. If they can’t engage rationally, that’s on them—not you.

7. “I was just joking.”

We all love a good joke, but there’s nothing funny about disguising mean comments as “just joking.” It’s a classic move: offend someone, then escape blame by acting like it was all in good fun.

Watch out for repeated patterns of hurtful humor—these often reveal deeper disrespect.

If you feel uneasy about the “joke,” trust your gut. Genuine humor won’t leave you feeling belittled.

Moving Forward

If you spot these phrases in your conversations—especially if they pop up frequently—it might be time to reconsider the relationship or at least set some firm boundaries.

My personal journey taught me that the people you surround yourself with can make or break your spirit.

Whether you’re building the next tech unicorn (like I once dreamed of) or simply trying to maintain a healthy work-life balance, the energy around you matters.

Above all, be mindful of how you communicate, too. We can all slip into unhealthy habits if we’re stressed or scared. Recognizing these phrases is the first step toward better, clearer, and kinder communication. And trust me, it makes a world of difference when you have people in your corner who bring out the best in you.

You have the power to walk away from conversations—or entire relationships—that drag you down. As Edward Everett Hale once said, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”

Choose your circle wisely, and keep an eye out for these red flags in the words we use.

Here’s to healthier relationships and a brighter, more honest tomorrow.
