8 red flags that someone is not to be trusted, according to psychology

Trust is a tricky thing. It’s hard to know who to trust out there, and sometimes, people’s true colors don’t show up until it’s too late.

Psychology has some handy tips to help guide us. There are certain telltale signs or “red flags” that suggest someone might not be as trustworthy as they seem.

In this article, we’ll explore eight of these red flags. These are cues that psychologists suggest you should take seriously when deciding who to trust.

Remember, it’s not about being paranoid, it’s about being aware and making informed decisions. So, let’s dive in and learn what these red flags are.

1) Inconsistency in their stories

Trust is built on honesty, and honesty is reflected in consistency.

If someone’s stories don’t add up over time, this might be a psychology-backed red flag that they’re not trustworthy.

People who habitually lie often struggle to keep their stories straight. You might notice discrepancies in what they say, or they might contradict something they’ve said in the past.

This doesn’t necessarily mean they’re intentionally being deceitful. They could simply be forgetful or confused. But if it happens regularly, it’s worth considering as a sign of untrustworthiness.

Remember, it’s not about jumping to conclusions, but rather about being vigilant and attentive to these potential signs. After all, trust is a significant aspect of any relationship, and we should take it seriously.

2) They’re quick to break promises

Another red flag is when someone frequently breaks promises, no matter how small.

Let me share a personal example. I had a friend, let’s call him John. He was charismatic and fun to hang out with. But I noticed a pattern – John would often make plans and then cancel at the last minute.

At first, I brushed it off, thinking maybe he was just disorganized or overly busy. But as time went on, this behavior continued. Eventually, I realized that John was quick to make promises but equally quick to break them.

This is a red flag because it shows a lack of respect for other people’s time and feelings. It also suggests an inability to follow through on commitments, which is a crucial aspect of trustworthiness.

So if someone in your life frequently breaks promises, you might want to reconsider how much you can trust them.

3) They rarely make eye contact

Eye contact is an important part of human communication. It signals attentiveness, engagement, and most importantly, honesty.

Studies have shown that people who avoid eye contact are often perceived as less trustworthy. This is because we instinctively associate eye contact with sincerity.

Of course, there are cultural and personal differences when it comes to eye contact. Some people might be naturally shy or come from a culture where direct eye contact is viewed as aggressive.

But generally speaking, if someone consistently avoids your gaze when you’re having a conversation, it could be a sign that they’re not being completely honest with you.

4) They exhibit negative body language

Body language is a powerful form of non-verbal communication, and it can reveal a lot about a person’s intentions and feelings.

If someone regularly exhibits negative body language, it could be a sign that they’re not trustworthy. This could involve crossed arms, avoiding touch, leaning away from you during conversation, or frequently looking towards the exit.

These signs don’t necessarily mean that the person is being deceptive – they could just be uncomfortable or anxious. However, if you notice these signs consistently when interacting with them, it might be a red flag to consider.

It’s always important to use your judgment and consider other factors too. But if your gut feeling aligns with these physical signs, it could be a signal that something is off.

5) They struggle to express empathy

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. It’s what allows us to connect on a deep, emotional level.

When someone consistently struggles to show empathy, it can be a red flag. Trust is built on mutual understanding and emotional connection. If someone can’t or won’t try to understand your feelings, it’s hard to build that trust.

For instance, if you’re going through a tough time and they dismiss your feelings or make light of your situation, it can feel like they’re not respecting your experiences.

Remember, everyone has off days or moments where they struggle to express themselves. But if this lack of empathy is a consistent pattern, it could be a sign that they’re not someone you can fully trust.

6) They’re always the victim

Have you ever met someone who always seems to be the victim in every situation? No matter what happens, they always seem to end up on the short end of the stick, and it’s never their fault.

I once knew a person like this. Every time something went wrong, they had an excuse or someone else to blame. At first, I felt sympathy for them. But over time, I began to see a pattern. They never took responsibility for their actions or mistakes.

This is a red flag because it shows a lack of accountability and self-awareness – two crucial elements of trustworthiness. If someone can’t own up to their mistakes, it can be hard to trust them in the long run.

7) They gossip a lot

Gossiping might seem like a harmless, if not slightly annoying, habit. But it can actually be a red flag when it comes to trustworthiness.

Someone who frequently gossips is showing a willingness to share others’ private information for their own entertainment or to gain social advantage. If they’re willing to do it to others, they might be just as likely to do it to you.

This doesn’t mean that everyone who gossips is untrustworthy. But if someone has a habit of spreading rumours or sharing confidential information, it’s worth considering whether they’re someone you can trust with your own secrets.

8) They have a history of betrayal

The most significant red flag of all is a history of betrayal. If someone has betrayed others in the past, it’s a strong indication that they might do so again.

Betrayal can take many forms, from lying and cheating to more subtle forms like emotional manipulation. If you know that someone has a history of these behaviors, it’s a clear sign that they’re not trustworthy.

Remember, people can change. But until they’ve shown a consistent pattern of trustworthy behavior over time, it’s wise to be cautious.

The essence: It’s about intuition

The complexities of human behavior and relationships often boil down to our intuition.

This intuition, honed over centuries of human evolution, serves as our internal guide, helping us navigate the labyrinth of social interactions.

The red flags we’ve discussed are not bulletproof indicators of untrustworthiness. They’re simply tools to help you fine-tune your intuition, to recognize potential signs of deceit.

Remember, trust is a cornerstone of any relationship. It’s worth taking the time to evaluate, to reflect on these signs, and to trust your gut feelings.

At the end of the day, it’s about striking a balance between giving others the benefit of the doubt and protecting your own emotional well-being. Keep these red flags in mind, but also remember that everyone deserves a chance to prove their trustworthiness.

Trust your intuition. It’s there for a reason.
