Woman poisons boyfriend for $30m inheritance – only to discover it was all a scam

In a desperate bid for a non-existent fortune, Ina Thea Kenoyer, 48, resorted to murder. Living under the false impression that her boyfriend of 10 years was due to inherit $30 million, Kenoyer poisoned him with antifreeze – a plot that ultimately ended in his death and her arrest.

Steven Riley, 51, was a father of five who believed he was about to receive an unexpected windfall. An email from a lawyer had informed him of a supposed $30 million inheritance from a distant relative he never knew. The news of this imminent fortune seemed to have steered his thoughts towards reshaping his future. He considered ending his decade-long relationship with Kenoyer and sharing the inheritance solely with his sons.

But Kenoyer had different plans. Having lived with Steven for ten years, she believed she had the status of a common-law wife and would be entitled to Steven’s wealth after his death. To hasten this, she began to poison Steven’s iced tea with antifreeze, the sweet-tasting but deadly ethylene glycol.

On the day Steven was due to meet the lawyer and collect his inheritance, he started feeling unwell. He exhibited symptoms like stomach pains and difficulty in walking, similar to drunkenness, and was vomiting. His friends suggested urgent medical help, but Kenoyer dismissed it as heat stroke.

Later that day, when a friend visited to check on Steven, Kenoyer lied that he had gone to a walk-in clinic. The friend later found Steven unconscious at home and called 911. Despite being rushed to hospital and airlifted to another, Steven could not be saved and died on September 5.

Upon investigation, police discovered that the much-anticipated $30 million inheritance was non-existent. The email had been an online scam. It also came to light that Kenoyer had been making comments about poisoning her boyfriend with antifreeze. An autopsy confirmed that Steven had died from ethylene glycol poisoning – there was no alcohol in his system as Kenoyer had claimed.

Subsequent searches at their home revealed a Windex bottle containing antifreeze and traces of the substance in a beer bottle and plastic mug. When confronted, Kenoyer denied murdering Steven and suggested that he might have accidentally ingested antifreeze. She was arrested on October 30.

In May, Kenoyer pleaded guilty to felony murder, and in October she was sentenced to serve 25 years in jail. She was also ordered to pay a restitution of $3,455 to Steven’s family. The scam that had initially promised a life-changing fortune ended with a life lost and another behind bars.

This shocking case underscores the dark side of today’s digital age and its potential to fuel greed and desperation. Online scams promising vast sums of money are unfortunately common, as are the tragedies that can follow when individuals fall prey to these deceitful plots. In this case, not only did Steven lose his life over a non-existent fortune, but Kenoyer’s misguided belief in her entitlement led her down a path of murder and ultimately self-destruction.

The tragic tale also highlights the importance of understanding local laws and regulations. Kenoyer incorrectly assumed that living with Steven for ten years would grant her common law wife status, which is not recognized in North Dakota.

The devastating impact on Steven’s family serves as a sobering reminder of the irreversible emotional damage caused by such crimes. His five sons lost a father, while his sisters lost a brother, forever marked by Kenoyer’s actions. The monetary restitution ordered by the court fails to compensate for the profound emotional loss they continue to endure.

In a world increasingly characterized by digital interactions, it is crucial to remain vigilant against online scams and misinformation. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder that while technology can bring convenience and connections, it can also breed deception and, in extreme cases, lead to unthinkable consequences.

The tragic story of Steven Riley and Ina Thea Kenoyer offers a grim reminder of the dangerous mix of digital deception and human desperation. As we continue to navigate an increasingly digital world, this incident underlines the importance of not only being vigilant about online scams but also understanding the implications of our actions, driven by misinformation or false assumptions.

As society grapples with such complex issues, it’s vital to remember that behind every headline, there are real lives impacted. The ripples of this case extend beyond the loss of Steven’s life; they touch his family, his community, and remind us all of the heartbreaking consequences when greed, deception, and misunderstanding take hold.

Looking forward, it is essential that we educate ourselves and our communities about the realities of online scams and the importance of accurate legal knowledge. The cautionary tale of Kenoyer’s deadly attempt to secure a non-existent fortune is a stark warning for us all. As we continue our digital journey, let’s ensure it doesn’t lead us down a path as destructive as hers.
