If you want to become more disciplined, start doing these 10 things every morning

Discipline isn’t about drastic measures, it’s about consistency. It’s the small habits we incorporate into our daily routines that make the biggest difference.

If you’re looking to instill greater discipline in your life, starting with your morning routine can be a game-changer.

These ten things, when done every morning, can kickstart your journey towards self-discipline. They may seem simple, but remember, it’s often the simplest changes that have the most profound impact.

Let’s dive in and discover how tweaking your mornings can lead to a more disciplined life.

1) Wake up early

There’s a reason why many successful people are early risers – it gives them a head start on the day.

Waking up early isn’t just about beating the sun, it’s about gaining undisturbed, valuable time to focus on your goals before the world wakes up and demands your attention.

It might be challenging at first, especially if you’re used to hitting the snooze button multiple times. But once you make it a habit, you’ll find that starting your day early can significantly improve your discipline.

Dscipline is about making choices that lead to long-term benefits, despite short-term discomfort. So resist the allure of the warm bed and start your day with determination and purpose. You’ll find that this one change can set a disciplined tone for the rest of your day.

2) Plan your day

This is something I’ve incorporated into my routine and it has made a world of difference for my productivity and discipline.

Taking a few minutes each morning to plan my day, jotting down my tasks and priorities, helps me stay focused and organized.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found myself getting pulled in different directions, only to be saved by the schedule I’d set for myself in the morning.

Knowing what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, allows me to manage my time effectively and keeps me disciplined. Plus, there’s something incredibly satisfying about crossing off tasks from my list – it’s like a little pat on the back for staying disciplined!

Give it a try. Plan your day every morning and see how it impacts your level of discipline.

3) Eat a healthy breakfast

You’ve probably heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day – and it’s true. Starting your day with a balanced, healthy meal can provide you with the energy you need to be productive and focused.

But did you know it also plays a role in self-discipline?

A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found a link between glucose levels and willpower. When our glucose levels are low, our willpower decreases. This means we’re more likely to give in to distractions and less likely to stick to tasks.

Start your day with a breakfast that includes complex carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats to keep your glucose levels steady and your willpower high. Your discipline might just thank you for it.

4) Exercise

Starting your day with a bit of exercise can be an excellent discipline-building habit.

It doesn’t have to be a full-blown, sweaty workout session (unless that’s what you enjoy). It could be as simple as a 15-minute yoga routine, a brisk walk around the block or a set of stretches.

Exercise gets your blood flowing, wakes up your body and mind, and sets a positive tone for the day. It’s also a great way to show yourself that you can set a goal (like working out every morning) and stick to it.

Over time, this commitment to daily exercise can spill over into other areas of your life, strengthening your overall discipline.

5) Practice mindfulness

Mindfulness might not be the first thing you think of when it comes to discipline, but trust me, it plays a significant role.

When you practice mindfulness, you’re training your mind to focus on the present moment, which is an essential part of discipline.

You can start with just a few minutes each morning. Sit in a quiet place, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. If your mind wanders (and it will), gently bring it back to your breath.

In doing this daily, you’re essentially flexing your focus muscle, which will help you stay disciplined throughout the day. It’s like a mental workout for your brain!

6) Practice gratitude

Starting your day with a sense of gratitude can have a profound impact on your outlook and discipline.

Taking a moment each morning to reflect on the things you’re grateful for can help cultivate an attitude of positivity and contentment. It’s a gentle reminder of the good in your life, which can often be overlooked in the hustle and bustle of daily routines.

This practice can help you stay motivated and disciplined. After all, when you appreciate what you have, you’re more likely to take steps to maintain or improve it.

Before you step into the chaos of the day, take a few quiet moments to fill your heart with gratitude. It could be the fuel your discipline needs to thrive.

7) Limit screen time

This one was tough for me. As someone who enjoys scrolling through social media while sipping my morning coffee, it was hard to admit that this habit was hindering my discipline.

The reality is, starting your day with screen time can lead to a reactive mindset instead of a proactive one. It’s easy to lose track of time and get sucked into the digital world, which can throw off your entire morning routine.

I decided to limit my morning screen time. Now, I use this time to engage in more productive habits that contribute to my discipline, like reading a book or journaling. This small change has made a significant difference in my focus and productivity throughout the day.

8) Embrace silence

In a world that’s always buzzing with noise, finding a moment of silence might seem odd. But hear me out.

Starting your day with a few minutes of silence can be incredibly beneficial for your discipline. It allows you to gather your thoughts, set your intentions for the day, and approach things calmly.

Silence gives you a chance to listen to your inner voice, away from the noise of the world. It can help you stay aligned with your goals and make decisions that support your discipline.

Before diving into the day’s tasks, allow yourself a moment of silence. It might just be the quiet catalyst your discipline needs.

9) Hydrate

You might be surprised to see this on the list, but drinking water first thing in the morning is a simple habit that can boost your discipline.

While we sleep, our bodies become dehydrated. Starting your day with a glass of water can help rehydrate your body, kickstart your metabolism and boost your energy levels.

But more than that, making a conscious choice to hydrate each morning is a small act of self-discipline. It’s a simple, healthy habit that can set a positive tone for the rest of the day.

Make it a point to drink a glass of water each morning. Your body – and your discipline – will thank you for it.

10) Be consistent

If there’s one thing you should know about discipline, it’s this: consistency is key.

Discipline isn’t built in a day. It’s the result of consistent actions, repeated day in and day out. It’s about showing up for yourself every single day, even when it’s hard, even when you don’t feel like it.

Your morning routine should be non-negotiable. Make a commitment to yourself to follow through with these habits every morning, regardless of how you feel.

Consistency is the glue that holds all these habits together. It’s the driving force behind discipline. So, start each day with these routines and stick to them. Before you know it, you’ll be reaping the benefits of a more disciplined life.
