Violence erupts in Bahraich during Durga immersion

Bahraich Violence

A violent clash erupted in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh during a Durga idol immersion procession on Sunday. The incident occurred in Mansoor village when a dispute arose over loud music being played during the procession. The altercation escalated into stone pelting and gunfire, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to several others.

Approximately 30 individuals have been detained in connection with the violence. In response to the unrest, police have deployed tear gas and lathi charges to disperse ongoing protests, which included the vandalism of local shops and the burning of a hospital and pharmacy. District Magistrate Monika Rani stated that efforts are being made to control the situation.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has vowed to take strict action against those responsible for the disturbances.

He instructed additional DG law and order Amitabh Yash and Home Secretary Sanjeev Gupta to oversee operations on the ground and ensure order is restored.

Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya also promised strict punishment for the perpetrators and justice for the victims. In a post on social media platform X, Maurya stressed that any attempts to disturb the peace and harmony in Uttar Pradesh will fail. Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra condemned the administration’s handling of the situation, labeling it as “unfortunate.” She called on Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to take decisive action against those responsible for the unrest.

Samajwadi Party leader ST Hasan emphasized the importance of strict action against anyone violating the law, highlighting the need for communities to avoid provocations and address grievances through proper channels. The family of the deceased, Gopal Mishra, initially refused to perform his last rites, demanding strict action against those responsible for his death. The situation was resolved after intervention by Bahraich MLA Sureshwar Singh, who assured that severe actions would be taken against the accused.

As the area remains tense, officials continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further outbreaks of violence and ensure peace is restored in Bahraich.
