Bloober Team, the developer behind the Silent Hill 2 remake, has admitted that it needed to evolve after releasing The Medium in 2021. The game, which received a Metascore of 71, became a turning point for the studio as it looked to create bigger and better games. Director and producer Jacek Zieba said, “I think after The Medium it was very clear to us that we needed to evolve.
It was like, ‘let’s end the chapter of the adventure games.’ Layers of Fear, Observer, and The Medium were strange, experimental, with fixed camera tools. ‘Okay, let’s finish with that.'”
The studio’s decision led to the development of the Silent Hill 2 remake and its upcoming original IP, Cronos: The New Dawn. The Silent Hill 2 remake, released on October 8, received glowing critical reception and served as a coming out party for Bloober Team, showcasing its ability to create a big-budget survival horror adventure.
However, the true test for the studio will be Cronos: The New Dawn, which will be developed without the framework of one of the most beloved horror games of all time. Unveiled at the Xbox Partner Showcase event, Cronos is described as “a twisted time travel story set in an unforgiving post-apocalyptic future,” blending elements of survival horror and science fiction. The game’s trailer reveals a compelling scene where a character, reminiscent of Isaac from “Dead Space” and a Big Daddy from “BioShock,” plays chess with a woman before traversing a desolate, apocalyptic landscape.
The latter part of the trailer showcases actual gameplay, hinting at the challenges players will face as they navigate a deadly wasteland and battle “monstrous abominations.”
Bloober Team director and designer Wojciech Piejko acknowledged the challenges the studio faced during the development of the Silent Hill 2 remake, stating, “They recreated a legendary game.
Bloober Team’s evolution post-Medium
They made the impossible possible, and it was a bumpy road because of all the hate on the internet.
The pressure was big on them, and they delivered, and for the company, it’s an amazing moment.”
Despite the difficulties, the team remained focused and delivered a successful remake. Zieba added, “It was tough for those couple of years before the release. But the team didn’t let it get under their skin.
They made it. We made it. And now, it’s very good spirits inside the studio.
We want to show what we can do on our own, how we can evolve our ideas.”
The studio considers this stage of its evolution to be “Bloober Team 3.0,” its second phase as a horror developer. Zieba emphasized, “We want to be a horror company. We want to find our niche, and we think we found our niche, so now we just—let’s evolve with it.”
Cronos: The New Dawn, set to release sometime in 2025, will be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S systems.
