Built during World War II as a sea fort, it was taken over in 1967 by Paddy Roy Bates, a former pirate radio broadcaster. Bates declared Sealand an independent nation, though it has no official recognition from world governments.
In a surprising move, Sega has partnered with Sealand to promote their upcoming fantasy RPG, Metaphor ReFantazio.

As part of the game’s launch celebrations, Sega is offering UK fans an extraordinary opportunity: the chance to become a member of Sealand’s royal family. The winner of this competition will receive the title “Hand to the Sovereign Prince of Sealand,” connecting the game’s royal theme with Sealand’s quirky history.

Liam Bates, the current prince of Sealand, expressed his excitement about the new title, stating that while they have established several noble titles over the past five decades, they have never had a Hand to the Prince.

In addition to the honorary title, the prize package includes transportation to Harwich, a two-night hotel stay, and a speedboat trip to Sealand.
Upon arrival, the winner will be officially granted the title with an authentic registration deed from Sealand’s government.

To enter the competition, fans must follow Sega and Atlus West on social media and create a short video explaining why they deserve to be the Hand to the Sovereign Prince of Sealand. However, videos with background music will not be accepted.
Metaphor ReFantazio, set in The United Kingdom of Euchronia, tells a story of chaos and unrest following the assassination of the king. Players, alongside their fairy partner Gallica, must navigate this turmoil to break a curse placed on the supposedly deceased prince. By integrating this whimsical competition with their game launch, Sega creates a memorable and engaging experience for fans, showcasing the creative synergy between video games and unusual real-world adventures.
