Keywords Studios acquires Certain Affinity

Keywords Affinity

Keywords Studios has acquired Certain Affinity, a US-based game development studio known for its work on the “Halo” and “Call of Duty” franchises. The acquisition, announced on Oct. 18, 2024, will see Certain Affinity’s 180 employees across the US and Canada join Keywords Studios.

Founded in 2006 by former Bungie staff, Certain Affinity has built a reputation for providing high-end co-development services on AAA multiplayer titles. The studio has contributed to nearly 20 projects supporting the “Halo” and “Call of Duty” franchises, as well as working on titles like “Hogwarts Legacy” and “DOOM.”

Certain Affinity will continue to be led by its founder and CEO, Max Hoberman, and president and COO, Paul Sams. The acquisition is expected to drive growth, supported by a strong pipeline of projects, including the highly anticipated game “EXODUS” from Archetype Entertainment, a division of Wizards of the Coast.

Keywords Studios expands North America presence

“At this most difficult time in the market, we’re thrilled to be able to provide stability and a supportive home for our team,” said Hoberman in a statement. “The respect for our talent and culture that Keywords has shown, along with a willingness to invest in our growth, is unparalleled.”

Keywords CEO Bertrand Bodson expressed his enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Certain Affinity to the Keywords Group.

They bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and expertise to our Create division, complementing our existing skills and expanding our presence notably in the US and Canada.”

The acquisition, subject to closing conditions, includes both an upfront cash purchase and an earn-out component based on Certain Affinity’s performance. This marks Keywords Studios’ second acquisition of 2024, as the company continues to expand its service offering and solidify its position in the video game development industry. Earlier this year, Certain Affinity had to lay off 10% of its workforce, citing industry-wide slowdowns in funding and investment in new projects.

The studio’s first wholly-owned project is currently codenamed “Project: Loro.”
