Forget Samsung’s Z Fold – this new "trifold" design has everyone talking

Huawei’s Mate XT, the world’s first tri-fold phone, has taken smartphone innovation to new heights, outshining industry giants like Samsung and Google. Described as a “deeply impressive bit of kit,” the device’s triple-fold design offers an unprecedented user experience, signaling a potential new direction in the evolution of foldable phones. Despite its hefty price tag, the Mate XT’s advanced features and impressive build quality suggest that Huawei could be leading the future of Android phones.

The Huawei Mate XT’s triple-fold innovation is deemed a “world-first,” thanks to its unique design. Unlike the conventional clamshell or book-like forms of other foldables, the Mate XT, when all folded up, resembles a typical 6.4-inch phone. However, it holds a hidden surprise – a first hinge that unfolds into an XL display and a second hinge that reveals an even larger XXL display, measuring an impressive 10.2-inches diagonally.

With such a design, users might never require a tablet again. The Mate XT’s screen is perfect for consuming media, especially during long journeys. The subtle ‘crease,’ barely noticeable from the front, coupled with a 120Hz variable refresh rate and high brightness, offers an unmatched viewing experience right in your pocket.

One of Huawei’s standout innovations is its hinge design. The absence of ‘crunchiness,’ the robust build, and the perfect resistance level make these hinges a marvel of mechanical design. Furthermore, the screens around the hinges are unobstructed, ensuring uninterrupted flow across the display.

In terms of battery technology, Huawei leads with its silicon-carbon batteries. They offer higher energy density, longer lifespan, and faster charging potential compared to lithium-ion counterparts. While Huawei remains tight-lipped about the battery capacity of Mate XT, sources suggest it packs a whopping 5600mAh battery.

The Mate XT’s camera setup aligns with its high-end specs. It features a triple camera array with a 50-megapixel main camera equipped with optical stabilisation and f/1.4-4.0 variable aperture, a 3x optical zoom lens with stabilisation, and an ultra-wide lens.

However, this technological marvel comes with limitations – its hefty price tag and software restrictions due to Huawei’s HarmonyOS operating system. Currently priced at CNY ¥19,999 in China (equivalent to £2,135/$2,835/AU$4,150), the Mate XT is set for a China-only launch at the moment.

Despite these hurdles, the Mate XT’s innovative design and impressive features position Huawei well ahead of its competitors. This trailblazing device promises to revolutionise the future of foldable phones.

While the Mate XT’s design and features are groundbreaking, the device’s cost and software limitations may pose challenges for wider adoption. Its high price, equivalent to a MacBook Pro 16-inch, and reliance on Huawei’s HarmonyOS, rather than Google’s Android with Play Store, could limit its appeal to a niche audience for now.

However, despite these concerns, Huawei’s new phone is a game-changer. It heralds a new era in smartphone technology, pushing the boundaries of what a foldable device can achieve. The Mate XT’s introduction is more than just the launch of a new device – it signifies a paradigm shift in the market.

As we look to the future, it’s clear that Huawei’s innovative approach to smartphone design could inspire other manufacturers to rethink their own design strategies. The Mate XT may currently be a high-end, niche product, but its influence could ripple across the industry and shape the future of foldable phones.
