The first residents in Norfolk have been connected to a new high-speed broadband network as part of a £157 million initiative aimed at enhancing internet services throughout the county. The project, known as ‘Project Gigabit,’ is a collaboration between the government and the telecommunications firm CityFibre. Villages such as Newton St Faith and Horsham St Faith, which have historically faced slower internet speeds, are among the first to benefit from the new infrastructure.

CityFibre is working to install connections for 62,000 homes and businesses across Norfolk and Norwich.

Councillor Jane James, cabinet member for corporate services and innovation at Norfolk County Council, celebrated the advancements, stating, “It’s great to see the first customers connected via the Project Gigabit rollout in Norfolk.

Access to extremely fast and reliable full fibre is incredibly important to our residents and businesses and will transform the way people live and work in these rural communities.”

Residents like Martin Deltrice, an amateur broadcaster from Horsham St Faith, are already experiencing the benefits. “Both latency and reliability need to be good when broadcasting over amateur radio,” Deltrice explained. “If you’re trying to have a conversation, you can’t have the line keep dropping, but now the internet works beautifully.”

This new development is set to significantly improve digital connectivity in rural communities, providing faster and more reliable internet that supports both personal and business use.

The rollout of CityFibre’s network promises to bring lasting positive changes to the county.
