Bungie has announced a major shift in its content strategy for Destiny 2, starting in 2025. The game will move away from its current model of one large annual expansion to a new approach featuring two medium-sized expansions per year. According to Robbie Stevens, the assistant game director for Destiny 2, these new expansions will be similar in size to the Rise of Iron expansion from the original Destiny game.

“Each expansion will have its own unique version of a campaign and post-game experience that players can explore deeply beyond the initial playthrough,” Stevens said. The first expansion under this new model, codenamed Apollo, will introduce players to a Metroidvania-inspired destination. This marks a significant change in the design of Destiny 2 content, as players will have the freedom to explore a nonlinear campaign and uncover the story at their own pace.

Narrative Director Alison Luhrs elaborated on this concept, stating that players will be able to discover between 25 and 30 different threads of stories in any order.

“We’re focused on telling a more concise story with pacing that keeps up with what fans want,” Luhrs added.

Bungie also plans to reevaluate and shake up the existing structure of NPC interactions and quest delivery starting with the upcoming “Act 2: Revenant” and continuing into the Apollo expansion. In terms of raids and dungeons, a new raid will be released alongside the first expansion of 2025, with new challenges, twists, and rewards added in a subsequent major update. The second expansion will introduce a new dungeon with an expanded array of rewards.

The final major update of the year will feature an event showcasing legacy raid and dungeon content, similar to The Pantheon. Additionally, Bungie announced that dungeon keys will be discontinued starting next year. This strategic shift by Bungie, now under ownership by Sony, reflects the studio’s commitment to evolving Destiny 2’s content delivery and narrative complexity.

The new expansions, set to be released in the summer and winter of 2025, aim to maintain a steady flow of content throughout the year and encourage players to return to the game regularly.
