Schools reopened in Manipur on Tuesday after being closed for 11 days due to ethnic violence and protests. Education Department officials said attendance was lower in some institutions but expected it to return to normal from Wednesday. The decision to close schools and colleges on September 6 came after several violent incidents between September 1 and 7 that injured 20 people and claimed 12 lives, including two women.
Thousands of students protested in Imphal and other areas on September 9 and 10. They demanded the removal of the Director General of Police and the Chief Security Advisor, saying they could not manage the violence. Student leaders met with the Governor and Chief Minister to discuss their demands, which also included withdrawing Central forces and maintaining Manipur’s territorial integrity.
Authorities relaxed curfews for 10 to 13 hours on Tuesday in several districts to allow people to buy essential items like food and medicine.

The Manipur Government lifted the week-long mobile Internet ban on Monday in five valley districts. The ban, first imposed on September 10 after violent incidents and protests, had been extended until September 20. Security forces, including the Army, Assam Rifles, Border Security Force, Central Reserve Police Force, and Manipur Police, are continuing anti-insurgency and search operations in both valley and hilly areas.
