Meta’s funding of XR development has led to a significant breakthrough for the Quest headset. The Godot Engine, a free and open-source game engine, is now available as a standalone application on Quest 3 and Quest Pro devices. This means developers can create full games directly on Quest devices without needing a PC.
The Godot Editor, available in early access on the Horizon Store, offers a comprehensive set of features for game development. Fredia Huya-Kouadio, Godot’s Lead Android Developer and Senior Software Engineer at Meta, made this achievement possible through his experience with Godot’s Android port and a partnership with Meta. The Godot Editor supports the development of XR, 2D, and 3D apps and games.
Godot on Quest expands development
It also takes advantage of Horizon OS platform capabilities like seamless multitasking, allowing live editing, debugging, and profiling of XR projects in real-time. This development transforms the Meta Quest into a true spatial computer capable of creating and distributing its own native apps without relying on external devices.
It also expands the OpenXR ecosystem by allowing other vendors to bring similar capabilities to their devices. Meta’s dedication to XR development is yielding significant results, with the Quest headset receiving exclusive new capabilities that enhance the user experience. These advancements are part of Meta’s strategy to dominate the XR space and make immersive technology a central part of everyday life.
As the XR landscape continues to evolve, Meta’s investments are expected to drive further innovation and set new standards for the industry.
