After an impressive 11-year run, tech giant Google has made the decision to discontinue its Chromecast brand, marking the end of an era that began back in 2010.
Despite the widespread speculation about the reasons behind this decision, the company remains tight-lipped, sparking users’ curiosity about the future of their Chromecast devices.
However, Google is less secretive about its new project, the Google TV Streamer, designed to challenge advanced streaming boxes like Apple TV and Roku Ultra. The new service marks a significant upgrade from the previous dongle, featuring a refined design and a price tag of $100.
With the capacity to support 4K streaming at 60 fps using an HDMI 2.1a port, and HDR (Dolby Vision), Google TV Streamer aims to redefine the user experience. However, users should be aware that the device does not include an HDMI cable, which will incur an additional cost.
Among the unique features of the new streaming service are functionalities powered by Google’s Gemini AI, such as TV episode recaps and personalized viewing lists.
End of Chromecast, rise of Google TV Streamer
To cater to the global audience, the platform provides multi-language subtitles and dubbing options. Notably, this service supports multiple devices, enabling several family members to simultaneously use their preferred shows.
Further beyond it’s entertainment functionality, Google TV Streamer also serves as a smart home hub. It integrates seamlessly with both Thread and Matter, allowing effortless management of Google Home or Matter-compliant devices. The company has announced that shipments of this revolutionary device will begin on September 26.
