Apple’s approval of deceptive pirate streaming app raises concerns

"Pirate Streaming App"

Apple recently approved a notorious pirate streaming app, only weeks after it was removed from the iOS App Store. The app, known for its clever tactics, has seemingly fooled Apple once more, with multiple counterfeit versions coming to light on the App Store.

These versions appear to have slipped through Apple’s rigorous screening system, demonstrating the developer’s mastery of deception. An Apple spokesperson confirmed the removal of these apps but declined to comment on future plans to prevent similar situations.

The deceptive apps, distributed by different developers, are essentially different versions of the same app. They present themselves as typical photo and video apps, hiding a plethora of pirated content from streaming giants such as Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and even Apple TV+.

The apps use sophisticated techniques to bypass the App Store Review process. Mainly, they use geofencing to hide their true nature from US users.

Apple’s struggle against deceptive streaming apps

Appearing only as basic photo and video apps, they seemingly divert Apple from streaming concerns.

Despite their removal and the deceptive techniques used, Apple’s review system has failed to prevent approval of these fraudulent apps. A similar incident occurred in 2017 when an app disabled its tracking codes in geofenced areas. This loophole remains unaddressed, potentially compromising user’s privacy and data.

The effectiveness of Apple’s review system is in question, with these fraudulent applications having a significant negative impact. With repeated instances, there seems to be little progress towards improving the system. If left unresolved, Apple may start to lose users’ trust, a critical component for any technology company.

Apple has yet to respond to these recently approved apps, leading to doubts over the efficiency of its App Store Review process. This news was provided by Filipe Espósito, a well-respected Brazilian tech journalist known for his updates on the latest Apple news on iHelp BR.
