Lesson Learned from Elliot Spitzer News: News Papers vs Online News

I was walking in mid-town Manhattan yesterday as the media frenzy regarding NY Governor Elliot Spitzer was in full swing. At the time, I had no clue what was going on, but did see all the media gathered in front of the Governor's office.

I asked someone on the street and he told me, "you'll read about it in the papers tomorrow".

Do you think this way? Is this how you think about technology?

Clearly the man who told me this was not familiar with or did not know of "online news". In today's news cycle, papers are becoming more and more irrelevant - it's the world of ONLINE media that's growing.

Remember, if you are going to leverage technology as a tool in your business, you can't have the mind set of "you'll read it in the papers tomorrow". Your mind set must be, if it's news at 12:00pm, it'll be online by 1:00pm or sooner.

What does this mean for your business?

This means that having an old web site is not good enough. You have to have a new and fresh web site. Having no email newsletter or one that's not well designed is NOT good. Not having a blog is a NO, NO.

These are the basics.

Next up is that you need RSS feeds and hooks and profiles to social media tools.

If you don't know about Facebook, LInkedIn, or other social media tools, you need to learn how to use them and consider a temporary assistant or junior member of your staff who can help you leverage these low cost (or zero cost) online tools.
