Google's Phone: What it's All About

Not many people know what Google's new "G-phone" will be all about. But one thing we do know is that it's not going to be a "phone" produced by Google. What it will be is an operating system to compete head on with Windows Mobile software, and other software such as Symbian.
The Google mobile operating system, will be based on Linux and provide phone companies with a lower cost way to create phones (no license to Microsoft for using Windows Mobile) and be subsidized with Google advertising. Keep in mind, at this time, most everything Google does it all about providing an outlet for more eyeballs to view its advertising.
The problem for Google will be that many of the incumbent cell phone network providers, like Verizon Wireless, Sprint and AT&T already have invested in their cell phone infrastructures. Are they going to want to work with Google?
Also, the all important operating system - is something to seriously think about. Will businesses who rely on Windows Mobile for its tight integration into Outlook and "Windows like" interface want to switch their cell phone to a G-phone?
The NY Times writes Some analysts say that the Google project's effect on the wireless industry is not likely to be as profound, at least initially, as that of Apple's iPhone, whose revolutionary look and features have redefined consumer expectations for mobile phones.
"The iPhone was a milestone in terms of how people use a mobile device," said Karsten Weide, an analyst with IDC. "The GPhone, if it does come out, will help Google with distribution for their online services."
At the core of Google's phone efforts is an operating system for mobile phones that will be based on open-source Linux software, according to industry executives familiar with the project.
So there you go. Although the first G-phones won't be out for some months (at the very least) when they do launch you can make an informed decision on if it is for you - or not.
