Seagate Buys Mirra - Jump Over Maxtor and Western Digital

Hard drive manufacturers must innovate to push their businesses beyond hard disks. Vendors have exterior drives, internal drives, USB based drives and etc. In addition they partner with backup software companies (like Dantz, now part of EMC) as well.

Seagate's purchase of Mirra gives it a POWERFUL tool to extend its solutions to include Internet based backup and file access.

Extreme Tech writes More importantly, the Mirra services also allow wide-area network storage, allowing shared access to files, such as photos, over the Internet. The software allows remote management of stored files, part of a Seagate strategy to facilitate the management and coordination of user content across various clients, the company said. The software also allows trusted email access into the appliance for management purposes.
