Instant Messaging: it can reduce your email load
Often I find myself surrounded by a flurry of short email messages going back and forth. While email is great for longer discussions and archiving substantive comments, IM is perfect for short replies and insight. There's no email to delete, clog up your inbox or "get back to".
If you have a question and know someone is online you don't have to worry about waiting for a message - you get one in seconds/minutes.

ZD Net's Brian Cooley writes IM restores that rapid-fire pungency e-mail used to have, an electronic version of someone sticking their head in your office door.
