PC Sales Aid Microsoft, but Legal Expenses Hurt Profits

NY Times writes Microsoft reported solid quarterly gains in revenue and operating income yesterday, providing further evidence of increased demand for personal computers in both the consumer and corporate markets.

The company's net income was held down by a series of one-time payments, including nearly $2 billion to settle its legal disputes with Sun Microsystems and $603 million for a fine imposed by the European Commission. (full story)
