CNet: Wal-Mart to write own name on notebooks
The retail giant reportedly plans to launch a line of notebooks under its own brand name next year, a move
that could push down prices, analysts say. (full story)
My spin: Push down prices is not the right word. If Wal-Mart does for notebooks what it does for pickles and orange juice its notebook prices will drop like a rocket. Now, Dell has been the price leader - what will their reaction be to Wal-Mart. HOWEVER, my guess is that Wal-Mart is selling to a different market segment than Dell is. Sure the "average" consumer might buy a notebook from Dell or Wal-Mart. But most serious tech shoppers are not going to walk around with a Wal-Mart branded notebook!
